The Legionnaires' disease is once again threatening New York City, where according to the latest data three people have died, and 67 have been infected in Harlem. This serious form of pneumonia is caused by the bacterium Legionella and is transmitted through inhalation of aerosols that contain the bacteria, from water or air conditioning.
Symptoms of the disease usually appear two to three days after infection. They include headache, muscle aches, elevated temperature, cough, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Particularly vulnerable are people over 50 years old, smokers, and those with weakened immune systems.
Legionnaires' disease is transmitted through contaminated water, usually in cooling systems of air conditioning or water supply systems. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to prevent infection, it is essential to maintain proper hygiene in water systems.
In New York City, there has been an increase in cases of Legionnaires' disease, particularly due to insufficient maintenance of cooling systems. Authorities have urged residents to seek medical help if symptoms resembling the flu appear.
