New York (AP) — Cleveland Guardians pitcher Gavin Williams nearly achieved a no-hitter, allowing only one hit in the ninth inning, when Juan Soto hit a home run. The Guardians secured a victory over New York Mets with a score of 4-1, finishing a three-game series in the middle.
Williams (7-4) delivered three scoreless innings and struck out six batters, including Francisco Lindor at the start of the ninth inning. Soto finished the game with a hit, sending the ball over the field, marking the first hit for Mets in the fourth inning of the previous match.
Guardians have not thrown a no-hitter since May 15, 1981, which is the longest period in league history. This match was significant for the team, as they completed a series with three games against Mets, who played all of the last nine matches.
Williams struck out 126 batters, which is a new record for his career, surpassing the previous maximum by 17 batters. This tally is the highest in the leagues since Alex Cobb struck out 131 batters in a match on September 29, 2023.
David Fry opened the scoring in the second inning, hitting a home run against David Peterson (7-5). Anhel Martinez added a two-run home run in the third inning, while Gabriel Arias executed a triple with a home run in the sixth.
