In Southern Carolina, two deputies were injured during a training session on July 29. They were injured by firearms that turned out to be unregulated, taken from a plastic bag on the table, reported Sheriff of Greenville County, Hobart Lewis.

During the training, which took place in a local school, the deputies were assigned to check premises, when another officer, who was supposed to play the role of a suspect, fired at them with a weapon that was believed to be loaded with blank rounds. However, instead of this, a type of breaching firearm was used, which is typically used for breaking down doors and windows, and may cause injury.

Regardless of the adherence to regulations, the officers did not manage to properly protect the rounds, since they were fired from a very close distance. As a result of the incident, one of the deputies received serious injuries to the abdomen, while the other - in the upper part of the body. Both officers underwent emergency surgery and are currently recovering in the hospital.

The sheriff reported that the internal investigation is ongoing, and those who participated in the incident may face disciplinary action. The sheriff's office of Greenville has suspended training with the use of firearms until the investigation is completed.
