Washington (AP) — President Donald Trump announced in the middle of the week about the introduction of a 100% tariff on imports of chips and semiconductor devices. This decision, according to his words, leads to an increase in prices for electronics, automobiles, household appliances, and other goods that are considered essential in the digital age.
Trump emphasized that companies that produce chips in the US will be exempt from this import tax. He also stressed that companies could avoid the tariff if they "commit to building or are already in the process of building" manufacturing capabilities on the territory of the United States.
This announcement came amid a shortage of chips during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has contributed to rising prices for automobiles and overall inflation increases.
