- The monument is expected to be restored by 2027 with new informational panels.
- The restoration of the monuments is part of the Trump administration's efforts to preserve American history.
The Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland, has announced the restoration of the Confederate monument to the National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. This monument, created by sculptor Moses Ezekiel, was vandalized in 2023 following a recommendation from Congress as part of the Biden administration's efforts to remove symbols of the Confederacy.
The estimated cost of the restoration is approximately 10 million dollars, and the process is expected to take nearly two years. The monument, which depicts the "lost cause" of the Confederacy, will feature informational panels that explain its history.
The monument, first unveiled in 1914, showcases idealized representations of slavery and propagates the myth of the "lost cause," asserting that the Confederacy was noble. Haaland emphasized that the monument should not have been vandalized, affirming that its restoration is part of the effort to "support American history."
In this regard, the National Park Service also announced the restoration of the statue of Albert Pike, a Confederate general, which was removed during protests in 2020. These actions have sparked discussions about how U.S. history is represented in society.
