The Government of the United Kingdom Demands Clarification from China Regarding the Embassy

  • China must provide an explanation regarding the unprecedented plans by August 20.
  • The banned embassy has caused significant concern among local residents.
  • The construction plan was previously rejected due to safety issues.

The Government of the United Kingdom has reached out to China requesting clarification on the unprecedented plans for the new "super embassy" in London or to explain why some of the embassies were closed. In a letter sent on September 6, 2025, the Minister of Housing and the Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner, gave the Chinese embassy two weeks to provide additional information before a decision is made regarding the construction permit.

The banned embassy occupies an area of 20,000 square meters in the Royal Mint Court area in eastern London. If approved, it will become the largest embassy in Europe. The plans have raised concerns from local residents, who express their worries about safety and human rights in China, as well as the possibility of protests.

In the letter, Rayner noted that some buildings on the embankments, including a cultural center and the embassy building, were "temporarily" closed. She requested representatives of the consulting firm responsible for the project to detail the reasons for the embankment adjustments.

Additionally, Rayner reached out to the Chinese embassy requesting to discuss the possibility of providing unprecedented versions of the embankment and to provide information on how the embassy plans to resolve the safety issues raised by the government. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Home Office also received copies of this letter.

The construction plan for the embassy, proposed by China for £255 million sterling in 2018, had previously been rejected by the Tower Hamlets council due to safety issues. After the Labour Party came to power in September 2024, the issue was once again raised for discussion.
