Eddie Palmieri, a prominent musician in the genre of Latin jazz and rumba, passed away at the age of 88. His death was announced by Fania Records on September 6, 2025. According to Palmieri's family, Gabriel, he passed away in New Jersey after a lengthy illness.
Palmieri, a pianist, composer, and bandleader, became the first Latin American to win a Grammy, and throughout his career, he received seven more awards. He was born on December 15, 1936, in Spanish Harlem, New York, and from an early age began learning to play the piano.
At the beginning of his career, he played in orchestras, and in 1961 he founded his own group "La Perfecta," which became the first to use trombones instead of trumpets. In 1975, his album "The Sun of Latin Music" became the first Latin album to win a Grammy. Throughout the 1980s, he also won two awards for the albums "Palo pa' rumba" and "Solito."
Palmieri continued to release new music into the 1980s, including live performances during the COVID-19 pandemic. He was an active participant in concerts and recordings with Fania All-Stars, and also received numerous accolades for his contributions to music.
In 2002, the Yale University awarded him an honorary degree, highlighting his influence in creating a shared community through music. Palmieri was also a musical ambassador who popularized Latin jazz in various corners of the world.
