The Report on Human Rights in the USA Changes Focus on Important Issues
- The Trump administration is reducing the scope of reports on human rights.
- The reports now more softly describe rights violations in El Salvador and other countries.
- The focus is shifting to freedom of speech in authoritarian countries.
This is reported by NBC News, The Yomiuri Shimbun.
Washington — The Trump administration is significantly shortening the annual reports on human rights from the State Department, placing a new emphasis on limiting freedom of speech for US allies and opponents. These reports, which have been compiled by American diplomats for nearly 50 years, are an important tool for assessing the state of human rights in various countries.
The last report, which is usually published annually, will be delayed for several months. According to a statement from one of the senior officials at the State Department, the new report for 2024 went through changes that aimed to improve its readability and compliance with legal requirements.
Along with the leaks, the Trump administration intends to significantly reduce criticism of certain countries, such as El Salvador, Israel, and Russia, where serious human rights violations have been documented. For example, the report for El Salvador, which the Trump administration is preparing, claims that the country "lacks reliable data on significant human rights violations." This contrasts with the previous report, which documented systematic killings, torture, and harsh conditions in detention facilities.
In the documents that have been reviewed, there are no mentions of racism related to gender, and violations of the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals have been notably omitted from the legal discourse. During internal discussions at the State Department, diplomats were recommended to minimize references to potential human rights violations, including corruption and racism against LGBTQ+ people.
Moreover, the Trump administration plans to refocus its attention on problems related to freedom of speech, which are becoming increasingly restricted in some authoritarian countries. Although the reports still describe human rights violations in these countries, the language used to describe these violations has become noticeably softer.
The reports on human rights, which are expected to be submitted to Congress by the end of July, are usually published in the spring or early summer. Official US representatives state that most of the reports this year were practically completed when the Biden administration took over in January.
