- Experts speculate on Putin's intentions regarding the resolution of the conflict.
U.S. President Donald Trump may meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin next week to discuss the war in Ukraine. Representatives of the White House reported this, but cautioned that there remain serious "hurdles" on the path to achieving a ceasefire.
Secretary of State Mark Rubio expressed hope that progress could lead to a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky in the future. He noted that now is a better time for negotiations under which Russia is ready to conclude the war.
Trump stated about a "wonderful progress" towards ending the war, after announcing plans for a meeting with Putin. At the same time, he emphasized that there was no "breakthrough moment" during the visit of U.S. Special Envoy Steven Vitkoff to Moscow.
Zelensky, in his evening address, also expressed hope that Russia is now more inclined to a ceasefire, stating that "the pressure is working".
However, experts express doubts about Putin's true intentions, noting that the Kremlin may use the negotiations to achieve its strategic goals in Ukraine. They emphasize that the war is extremely important for the legitimacy of Putin's regime and the economy of Russia.
It is noted that Trump proposes to hold a trilateral meeting, which would unite Putin and Zelensky in a significant diplomatic event since the illegal annexation of Russia three years ago. However, the Kremlin has not confirmed any of these meetings yet.
