It has been revealed that more than half of the calories Americans consume come from ultra-processed products

  • The CDC report shows that 55% of calories consumed by Americans come from ultra-processed products.
  • Ultra-processed products are associated with chronic diseases, such as obesity and diabetes.
  • A decrease in the consumption of ultra-processed products has been observed since 2013.

According to the new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 50% of the calories that Americans consume come from ultra-processed products. This report covers the period from September 2021 to September 2023.

According to the data, among Americans aged 1 year and older, nearly 55% of total calorie intake comes from ultra-processed products. For adults, this figure is approximately 53%, while for children and adolescents up to 18 years old, it is about 62%.

Ultra-processed products, as a rule, are high in calories, added sugars, sodium, and saturated fats. They are associated with an increased risk of developing chronic diseases, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

According to the data, burgers, sandwiches, sugary drinks, pizza, and sweet snacks are the biggest contributors to calorie intake from ultra-processed products. Children consume fewer calories from these products than younger adolescents.

Changes in the consumption of ultra-processed products have been identified since 2013, when their share was 56% for adults and 66% for children. Recent data indicate a noticeable decrease in the consumption of these products.

However, despite the decline, ultra-processed products remain the primary component of the diet, which raises concerns among experts. They attribute the decline in consumption of such products and promote greater attention to consuming less processed products.

Currently, experts are trying to find ways to reduce the consumption of ultra-processed products, including through education of the population and changes in food policies.
