July became the third hottest month on Earth

  • July 2023 has become the third hottest month in the entire history of observations.
  • The temperature in Turkey reached a record of 50.5 degrees Celsius.
  • Extreme weather conditions continue due to human activity.

July 2023 has been recognized as the third hottest month since records began. The average temperature over the surface of the Earth reached 16.68 degrees Celsius, which is 0.45 degrees higher than the average indicator for the period from 1991 to 2020.

In July, the temperature exceeded 50 degrees Celsius in Iraq and, for the first time, in Turkey, where a record temperature of 50.5 degrees Celsius was recorded. At the same time, in China and Pakistan, heavy rains caused the deaths of hundreds of people.

Breaking Records in Temperature

According to Carlo Buontempo, director of the European Climate Change Service Copernicus, a series of record temperatures has temporarily ended. "This does not mean that climate change has stopped. We continue to observe the consequences of warming in the form of extreme heat waves and catastrophic events," he noted.

Although July was not the hottest month, like July 2023, its temperature is still 1.25 degrees Celsius above the indicators of the industrial period from 1850 to 1900. The main reason for the increase in temperature is the burning of fossil fuels.

Experts warn that without rapid stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, we can expect new temperature records and worsening consequences of climate change.
