Negative Consequences of Netanyahu's Plans Regarding Gaza
- General Zamir warns about the risks of capturing Gaza
- Criticism from former Israeli officials is increasing
- International community expresses concern over humanitarian crisis
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing serious pressure, including from the heads of his military, regarding the proposal to expand military operations and capture the remaining parts of Gaza. General Eyal Zamir, head of the Israeli army's General Staff, warned that attempting to capture and maintain the territory could lead to a protracted conflict and endanger the lives of hostages.
This statement was made during a tense three-way meeting, where they discussed strategy before a cabinet meeting. Internal dissent is growing, as the prime minister is under pressure to conclude a 22-month conflict that has resulted in a record number of soldier casualties in the last 50 years. The number of Palestinian casualties has exceeded 61,000, prompting global condemnation.
Zamir emphasized that a decision to capture all of the territory would create a "quagmire in Gaza." He also pointed out that a prolonged occupation significantly increases risks for hostages. This week, nearly 600 former Israeli security officials appealed to Donald Trump, urging him to intervene and compel Israel to halt the war.
Moreover, Netanyahu is facing critical backlash from families of hostages, who accuse the prime minister of leading the country into catastrophe. According to estimates, around 50 hostages remain in Gaza, of which only 20 are believed to be alive. Meanwhile, some members of his government are advocating for the destruction of Gaza as part of the capture plan.
Currently, the international community is expressing concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Jordan has accused Israeli settlements of attacking humanitarian convoys, which further complicates the delivery of aid. There is an ongoing increase in Israel's isolation on the international arena due to its actions in Gaza.
