The management of the National Police of Ukraine reported the suspicion against the former head of the investigative unit No. 2 in Taganrog, Russia, based on evidence of the murder of Ukrainian journalist Viktoriya Roshyna during her detention in captivity.

The journalist was detained by Russian troops in the Berdyansk region in 2022 on the territory of temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia region and transferred to this investigative unit. During her captivity, Viktoriya reported systematic torture, beatings, threats, and also restricted access to medical assistance, water, and food.

According to the investigation, during the leadership of the suspect in the subsequent investigative unit, an organized system of repressive conduct was established with illegally detained Ukrainians, including civilians. Viktoriya Roshyna became one of the victims of this regime.

The actions of the suspected unit qualify as military crimes in accordance with international standards. The investigation is ongoing, and human rights defenders are working on identifying other persons involved in military crimes against Ukrainians.
