Germans are afraid that kebabs may become more expensive or disappear

  • Workers at the Birtat factory are protesting due to low wages
  • Possible increase in kebab prices due to inflation and rising costs
  • The history of kebabs in Germany goes back to the 1970s

Germans are concerned about a potential increase in kebab prices, which is a beloved street food. Kebabs in pita, which can be found on every corner, may become more expensive or even disappear due to inflation affecting meat supplies for these dishes.

Workers from one of the largest kebab factories in Germany, Birtat Meat World SE, have been protesting for several weeks over low wages and working conditions. They are demanding an increase in wages to 375 euros (434 dollars) per month.

Worker demands are not being met, and many of them are immigrants from Turkey, Romania, and Bulgaria, who work in harsh conditions at the factory where temperatures can drop to zero to keep the meat fresh. They are also trying to organize a collective agreement with the help of a union.

The factory, located in Murr, supplies thousands of kebab stands and fast-food outlets serving over 13 million consumers weekly. Some restaurant owners are worried that in the case of prolonged inflation, the beloved fast food of Germans may become more expensive or even disappear.

Already, Germans are feeling the impact of rising prices. A kebab that previously cost 2.50 euros now sells for 7 euros or more. One of the vendors in Berlin, Khalil Duman, notes that the increase in ingredient prices is leading to a significant burden on the businesses.

Kebab, known as döner, first appeared in Germany thanks to Turkish immigrants in the 1970s. This dish, which consists of meat, grilled with vegetables, has become a popular staple that many tourists consider a typical German dish.
