Trump Raises Tariff on Indian Goods Due to Russian Oil Imports

  • Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods
  • India will continue to import Russian oil
  • Oil prices have risen, despite economic instability

On August 7, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the introduction of an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods. This decision was made following a prolonged period of imports of Russian oil from India, which has caused tensions between the two countries.

The tariff, which takes effect 21 days after the announcement, will increase duties on certain Indian export goods by up to 50%. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs called this decision "extraordinarily unfortunate," noting that other countries also import Russian oil for their economic needs.

Trump asserts that India benefits from lower-priced Russian oil, regardless of the war in Ukraine. "They don't care about how many people in Ukraine are dying from Russian military action," he wrote in his social media profile.

According to data, India is the largest importer of maritime oil from Russia, importing nearly 1.75 million barrels per day in the first half of 2025, which is 1% more than last year. India relies on Russian oil to meet 35% of its crude oil needs.

Oil prices have risen in response to stable demand in the U.S., despite economic downturns related to new tariffs. Brent crude oil prices rose by 0.6% to $67.3 per barrel, while WTI increased to $64.76.

Analysts indicate that the new tariffs could negatively impact the global economy and demand for fuel. Trump also hinted at the possibility of introducing new tariffs on China due to their purchases of Russian oil.
