Investigators Demand Arrest of Kim Keon Hi, Friend of Ex-President
- Kim Keon Hi is suspected of involvement in corruption and manipulation of shares.
- The request for arrest was submitted after a lengthy questioning of the woman.
- This is the first case where both a former president and the first lady are arrested simultaneously.
In South Korea, investigators on Thursday submitted a request for the arrest of Kim Keon Hi, a friend of former president Yoon Suk Yeol, following her questioning regarding suspicions of corruption, manipulation of shares, and political influence. The request for arrest was submitted at 13:21 (04:21 GMT), reported special prosecutor O Jong Hi at a briefing.
This development occurs against the backdrop of Yoon Suk Yeol remaining under investigation due to the declaration of a state of war in the country. If the court approves the arrest request, it will be the first case in the history of South Korea where both a former president and the first lady are arrested simultaneously.
The investigation concerning Kim is part of three separate cases being conducted by the new liberal government of President Lee Jae Myung, who came to power after the previous presidential elections in March. Kim is being questioned regarding allegations related to gifts received through intermediaries that acted as a conduit for a church official who was seeking business advantages. Investigators have uncovered several allegations, including violations of laws concerning the financial market, political financing, and corruption.
In response to journalists' questions, Kim expressed her reluctance to comment on the allegations, but stated that she would not deny the accusations, labeling herself as a "non-designated person." Yoon, who is also facing serious allegations, previously refused to testify in a case involving a friend, which led to heightened tensions during the investigation of her.
