In Australia, a woman received compensation for 20 years of wrongful imprisonment

  • Ketlyn Folbigg received 2 million Australian dollars in compensation
  • The advocate considers this amount to be unjust and insufficient
  • Folbigg spent 20 years in prison for the murder of her four children

The Australian government has decided to pay 2 million Australian dollars (1.3 million US dollars) to Ketlyn Folbigg, who spent 20 years in prison for the murder of her four children. This decision has sparked outrage from her advocate, who described the amount as "deeply unjust."

The Attorney General of New South Wales, Michael Daley, stated that this amount was capped after a lengthy review of the materials of Folbigg's case. However, Folbigg's advocate, Rainey Regan, claimed that this compensation is "a moral outrage" and "ethically unacceptable."

Folbigg was released in 2023 after a judicial review revealed significant doubts about her guilt in the deaths of the children. Following her release, experts assessed the potential compensation at 10 million dollars or more, but the capped amount does not reflect the scale of her suffering.

Folbigg, who was previously regarded as "Australia's worst mother," is now being viewed as a victim of one of the largest miscarriages of justice in the country's history. Her advocate emphasized that, compared to other cases, such as the Lindy Chamberlain case, which received 1.7 million dollars over three years in compensation, Folbigg spent ten times longer in prison but received significantly less.
