The aftermath of the bombing in Pakistan has left 2 police officers dead

  • The explosion occurred in the northwestern part of Pakistan, in the city of Wana.
  • During the attack, two police officers were killed, and 14 individuals were injured.
  • The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan is suspected of being behind the attack on the police.

PESHWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A powerful bomb, planted on a roadside, struck a police vehicle in the northwestern part of Pakistan, killing two senior officers and injuring 14 others, mostly bystanders, officials reported.

The attack happened in Wana, located in South Waziristan, a district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to the local police chief Adam Khan.

In recent weeks, violence from militant groups has increased, claiming the lives of dozens of human rights defenders.

Pakistan is also preparing for a military operation in the Bajaur region, where officials will hold talks with the government and residents to prevent violence. Previous such operations have displaced thousands of residents over the years.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack on the police, but suspects are likely to fall on Pakistani Taliban or Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, known as TTP. This group often targets its attacks against human rights defenders and civilians in the region.

TTP is closely allied with Afghan Taliban, who returned to power in neighboring Afghanistan in August 2021 after the withdrawal of American and NATO forces after two decades of war.

Since then, many TTP fighters and leaders have found refuge in Afghanistan, where some of them live openly under the protection of the Taliban — a development that has given the group new momentum in Pakistan.
