Cambodia and Thailand Reach Agreement on Ceasefire
- Thirteen points of the agreement on the ceasefire have been signed between the countries.
- Temporary monitoring groups will be created to monitor the implementation of the agreement.
- Unresolved issues remain regarding the captured military personnel.
Cambodia and Thailand signed an agreement on the ceasefire, which took place after negotiations held in the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. The parties agreed on 13 points aimed at de-escalating the conflict and restoring peace in the border region.
This agreement was the result of a four-day session of the General Border Committee, which concluded on July 7, 2025. During the session, the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, which was signed on July 28 after a series of serious clashes that claimed the lives of dozens of people and displaced over 260,000 individuals, was discussed.
According to the joint statement, each country will create its own temporary monitoring group, composed of representatives from the armed forces of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), to coordinate the work of the Malaysia group.
During the conflict, which began on July 24, the parties accused each other of violating international humanitarian norms, including attacks on civilian populations. Each country has already reported the suspension of military mobilization and the relocation of troops to the border.
Despite the signing of the agreement, unresolved issues remain regarding 18 Cambodian soldiers captured by Thailand. Both sides continue to accuse each other of violations of the ceasefire, and further resolution of this issue is critically important for stability in the region.
At the conclusion of the negotiations, following the US in Malaysia, Edgar D. Kagan noted that this was an important step forward, but only the first of many that need to be taken to ensure lasting peace.
