US Trade with Other Countries Declines Due to Tariffs

  • US trade with Ireland fell by 46.34% in June
  • Chinese exports increased by 7.2% in July despite tariff impositions
  • The US deficit increased to $682.35 billion in 2025

US trade with the rest of the world continues to decrease for the third consecutive month. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, in June the total trade volume of the US stood at $445.40 billion, which is 3.08% less than in May. The decline began in May as well, when trade decreased by 1.11%. In the first three months of 2025, a surge in trade was observed, as importers sought to mitigate the impact of new tariffs instituted by President Trump.

In particular, trade with Ireland has decreased, dropping by 46.34% in June compared to May, to $8.05 billion. Meanwhile, trade with Switzerland decreased by 24.70%, and with Germany and France by 6.89% and 13.45% respectively. Overall, six countries, including Hong Kong and the Netherlands, experienced a decline in trade volume of around $1 billion in June.

At the same time, Chinese exports secured a 7.2% increase in July compared to the previous year, which could be attributed to the reduction in tariffs imposed by the US. However, exports to the US decreased by nearly 22%, while imports from America fell by 19%. Despite this, Chinese enterprises have found new markets for their goods in Africa and Southeast Asia.

The US deficit increased to $682.35 billion, which is 27.76% higher than in the same period of 2024. At the same time, the total trade volume between the US and the world increased by 9.59% in the first six months of this year, reaching $2.71 trillion.
