Eli Lilly announces a new drug for weight loss with impressive results
- The drug orforglipron helps reduce weight by 12%
- More than 59% of participants lost 10% of their weight
- A regulatory review is planned by the end of the year
The company Eli Lilly announced positive results from clinical trials of its new weight loss drug, which is named orforglipron. In the third phase of the trials, which involved over 3,000 participants with excess weight, it was confirmed that patients lost an average of 27.3 pounds (about 12.4%) over a period of 72 weeks.
Trials showed that 59.6% of participants who received the highest dose of the drug lost at least 10% of their body weight, while 39.6% lost at least 15%. The drug does not require restrictions in diet and can be taken at any time of the day.
Eli Lilly emphasized that the new drug could serve as a convenient alternative method for treating obesity, replacing traditional injectable GLP-1 forms. However, the company also noted that some side effects, such as nausea and vomiting, were more common compared to injectable forms.
Along with the company’s data, it is planned to submit orforglipron for regulatory review by the end of the year, with the aim of a global launch of the drug to address the obesity problem on a worldwide scale.
