Lukashenko Prepares Army to Suppress Protests in Belarus

  • Belarusian armed forces are receiving new powers for actions in the country.
  • Changes in legislation focus on the strong methods of security.
  • Lukashenko plans to utilize the army to suppress protests.

This is reported by Ukrayinska Pravda, RBC Ukraine.

The self-proclaimed president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, plans to expand the powers of the armed forces of the country, including granting them greater authority for actions within the state. This was reported by the Ukrainian Foreign Intelligence Service.

The draft law on changes to the laws that ensure military security and defense has already been submitted to the Palace of Representatives of Belarus. The document proposes changes to three main laws: on defense, on armed forces of the Republic of Belarus, and on the military state.

According to the Ukrainian intelligence, the new law modifies Belarus's approach to security, focusing on strong measures and granting the armed forces broad powers. Now the army not only has to repel aggression during wartime but also to "eliminate enemies" to ensure peace under conditions that correspond to the national interests of Belarus.

In addition, the new regulations allow armed forces to participate in suppressing internal armed conflicts, informational warfare in the interests of the state, respond to internal crises and crises in the neighboring countries, and also to prevent provocations near the borders of Belarus.

Moreover, the draft law expands the definition of military status: now it is possible not only in the event of an attack on Belarus but also in cases of aggression against the Union State or member states of the CSTO.

A meeting, during which the activities of the State Security Committee (KGB) of Belarus were discussed, took place on September 7. Lukashenko emphasized that the initiative is triggered not only by the internal situation but also by the "military-political climate" around Belarus, including the aggressive position of neighboring countries.

Lukashenko also noted that there are no plans for a short-term financing or a ban on KGB employees in the case of improving their work.
