Trump Wants to Change the Census, Excluding Illegal Immigrants
- Trump has given the directive to change the census of the U.S. population.
- The new census will exclude illegal immigrants.
- This initiative could impact the political landscape ahead of the elections.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he has given the directive to the Department of Commerce to start working on a new census of the population, which will exclude illegal immigrants from the population count. In his post on social media, Trump noted that this census will be based on "current facts and figures," as well as on results and information obtained during the presidential elections of 2024.
Trump emphasized that people who "are illegally residing in our country" will not be counted in the census. This proposal marks a significant shift from traditional census practices, which typically count all residents, regardless of immigration status.
This initiative is also seen against the backdrop of increasing pressure from the Republican side to ensure they can redraw congressional maps, which could strengthen the position of the Republican Party in the 2026 elections.
The Constitution requires a national census every ten years to determine representation in Congress, and the census website states that it is "designed to count every resident of the U.S." Trump has already attempted to change the 2020 census, but his efforts to add a question about citizenship were blocked by the Supreme Court.
