In Bucharest, on September 6, 2025, the funeral of Ion Iliescu, the first elected president of Romania after the fall of communism, took place. The ceremony was held in a church near the presidential palace Cotroceni, where many state officials paid tribute to the memory of the former leader. Iliescu passed away on September 3, 2025, at the age of 95 after a prolonged illness, including a diagnosis of stage four cancer.
The funeral took place on National Trauma Day, however, it also revealed deep divisions in society regarding his legacy. The party "United Romania" (USR), a coalition partner, refused to participate in the ceremony, which sparked controversy with the Social-Democratic Party (PSD), founded by Iliescu.
Marcel Ciolacu, former leader of the PSD, criticized the position of USR, stating that it testified to intolerance and lack of understanding. The absence of the new president Nicolae Ciucă at the funeral also drew attention, especially since he noted that "history will judge Ion Iliescu."
After stepping back from active politics in 2017, Iliescu faced legal issues, including accusations of involvement in crimes against humanity for his role in the racism during the revolution of 1989 and subsequent protests in 1990. Notably, despite numerous accusations, he was not found guilty.
A demonstration organized by activists from the group "Corruption Kills" took place on the same day, emphasizing that Iliescu should be remembered as a leader accountable for racism, rather than as a victim.
