Minister of Housing Faces Calls for Resignation Over Increased Rent
- Housing Minister Alok Sharma has increased the rent on his own property by £700
- Politicians are calling for the housing minister to resign
- The new law would ban raising rents after a notice has been issued
The housing minister in Great Britain, Alok Sharma, is facing demands for his resignation after it was revealed that he raised the rent on his property in East London by nearly £700 a month. Four landlords received notifications that their rent would not be extended, as the property was supposed to be sold, and they were forced to vacate it last autumn.
After the former landlords left the property, it was re-listed at a rent of £4,000 a month, which is £700 more than they previously paid. According to the information, Sharma claims that landlords could remain under a no-fault contract until the property is sold, but they decided to evict.
Politicians from the Liberal Democrats, Conservative Party, and the Scottish National Party have called for Sharma to resign, considering his actions hypocritical. Deputy leader of the SNP in Westminster, Pete Wishart, stated that after the publication of this news, Sharma should have promptly resigned from his position.
Sharma, who has advocated for the rights of landlords and criticized the exploitation of private landlords, emphasized that all legislative requirements must be adhered to. Her press secretary noted that she is seriously committed to her obligations.
According to the new amendments to the legislation that take effect next year, landlords who have completed the rental process will not be able to re-rent the property at a higher price after the notice has been issued.
