Forecast for the future of heavyweight boxing until 2026
- Oleksandr Usyk plans to finish his career in the brightest year.
- WBO requires Usyk to hold a fight with Joseph Parker.
- The future of heavyweight boxing may change with the departure of former boxers.
The heavyweight boxing landscape is undergoing changes, as many former boxers, such as Oleksandr Usyk, are reaching the end of their careers. Usyk, who is 38 years old, plans to hold only two more fights before retiring. Recently, he defeated Daniel Dubois, reaffirming his status as a leader in the division, but his departure could lead to significant changes in the heavyweight landscape.
WBO President Gustavo Olivieri emphasized that Usyk must hold a mandatory title defense against Joseph Parker, who is the interim champion. The parties have received a standard 30-day negotiating period, until September 23. If an agreement is not reached, WBO will begin the procedure to declare the title vacant.
Currently, the heavyweight division is filled with boxers who are nearing the end of their careers. Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, and other older boxers may also choose to leave the ring. This could lead to the championship belts remaining vacant, and new boxers, such as Agit Kabayel and Kubrat Pulev, having a chance at the titles.
It is predicted that by the end of 2026, the heavyweight division may look entirely different, with new champions and competitors emerging in the arena.
