Unemployment Claims Increase, But Remain at a Healthy Level
- The number of unemployment claims rose to 226 thousand.
- The number of job openings remains at a low level.
- Economists believe that Trump's tariffs are impacting the labor market.
Washington — The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits increased last week, which indicates that employers are still retaining workers, despite the economic uncertainty associated with U.S. trade policy.
According to data from the Labor Department, claims for unemployment benefits for the week ending August 2 rose by 7,000 to 226,000, which far exceeds economists' forecasts of 219,000 new claims.
This report is the first official release of labor market data since the negative jobs report was published on Friday, which prompted President Donald Trump to fire the head of the agency that oversees the monthly jobs data.
Meanwhile, the four-week moving average of claims, which smooths out some volatility from week to week, fell by 500 to 220,750.
The total number of Americans receiving unemployment benefits for the previous week, which ended July 26, rose by 38,000 to 1.97 million, which is the highest level since November 2021.
Financial markets reacted negatively to the jobs report, with the Dow Jones index dropping more than 600 points on Friday.
Among other signals of a weakening labor market, the latest report showed that employers cut 7.4 million vacancies in June, down from 7.7 million in May. The number of people who were laid off dropped to its lowest level since June.
Many economists assert that Trump's chaotic imposition of tariffs in April created uncertainty for employers, who have become less willing to expand their workforce.
In line with this data, larger companies have announced job cuts this year, including Procter & Gamble, Dow, CNN, and Starbucks.
