Announced Changes at the Annual Meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative

  • Bill Clinton announced changes at the CGI meeting aimed at addressing global challenges.
  • This year, the focus will be on economic, medical, and climate issues.
  • The CGI community has experience responding to natural disasters and humanitarian crises.

Former President Bill Clinton announced significant changes at this year’s annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative, which will take place in September. These changes are deemed necessary to respond to new challenges in the field of global development, particularly through war and climate disasters.

In his letter to the CGI community, published on Thursday, Clinton noted: "We must revisit how we work and how we honor our shared humanity." This year's goal is to unite to address problems, identify consequences, and resolve complex issues that lie ahead of the world.

Since its launch in 2005, CGI has served as a platform for announcing new initiatives or financial support for existing programs aimed at solving global problems. At the 2024 meeting, for instance, Jill Biden announced a commitment of $500 million for maternal health research.

This year’s meeting, which will again occur during the week of the UN General Assembly, will be led by Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and former Foundation CEO Chelsea Clinton. Among the invited guests are Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley and President of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani.

The focus of this meeting will be centered on seeking new solutions for economic, medical, climate, and humanitarian problems. Clinton believes that the CGI community was created to address such challenges, noting that this year marks 20 years since its establishment.

In the past year, CGI has helped organize responses to natural disasters, such as the earthquake in Haiti in 2010 and hurricanes in the Caribbean in 2017. According to estimates, CGI has assisted over 500 million people in 186 countries over the past two decades.

The administration of President Donald Trump has curtailed the activities of the U.S. Agency for International Development, which has led to a deficit in humanitarian program support. CGI hopes to close these gaps, having organized sessions called "Leaders," where representatives of various organizations work on creating new initiatives.

Clinton concluded with a call to action: "Now is the time to lift up and work on creating a brighter future."

It is noted that in the fall, the House Committee on Oversight will call on Clinton and Hillary Clinton to testify as part of the investigation into the affairs of Jeffrey Epstein. Organizers do not comment on how this will affect the preparation for the CGI meeting.
