Pilot release of a weight loss drug shows impressive results

  • The drug orforglipron showed an average weight loss of 12.4% over 72 weeks.
  • The results of the study indicate an improvement in the overall health status of participants.
  • Eli Lilly plans to submit an application for regulatory approval by the end of 2025.

The experimental drug for weight loss, developed by Eli Lilly, demonstrated positive results in clinical trials. During the 72-week study, more than 3,000 participants who received the highest dose of orforglipron lost an average of 12.4% of their weight.

Weight issues are a serious medical problem, and the new drug may serve as an alternative injection method. The pharmaceutical company is hopeful that demand for this drug will be significant once it receives regulatory approval.

Orforglipron, which is a GLP-1 agonist, helps lower blood sugar levels, reduces appetite, and promotes satiety. The results of the study also indicated improvements in other health aspects, such as cholesterol levels and the risk of cardiovascular events.

However, the study results showed lower indicators compared to the Wegovy drug from Novo Nordisk, which in 2021 demonstrated a weight loss of 14.9% over 68 weeks. Nevertheless, orforglipron may be easier for patients to use, as it can be administered in pill form.

During the trials, the most common side effects were mild and included nausea and vomiting. Dr. Simon Cork, a senior lecturer in physiology, noted that the results should be interpreted with caution, as a thorough analysis of the data is necessary.

The company plans to submit an application for regulatory approval by the end of 2025, and has already started manufacturing the drug to avoid future shortages.
