The restoration of the Confederate monument, which was demolished from the Arlington National Cemetery as per the Congress's recommendation, will cost nearly 10 million dollars, reported a U.S. Army official. The work is planned to be completed in two years.

The monument, created by sculptor and veteran of the Confederacy Moses Ezekiel in 1914, was taken down less than two years ago. Panels will be installed on it that provide historical context for the monument.

The U.S. Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, announced the restoration of the monument, stating that its nicknames were not commonly known. He also indicated that he does not believe in the "stereotypes" of American history.

This move is part of a larger agenda of the Trump administration, aimed at the protection of what it calls "the rewriting of American history." In February 2025, Trump signed an order that called for the restoration of historical monuments that had been demolished or altered.

In addition, the National Park Service announced that it will restore the status of Confederate General Albert Pike in Washington, which was taken down during protests in 2020.

Earlier, a commission created by Congress called the monument "problematic from the start to the end," as it features local representations of racism and a phrase that glorified southern separatism as "a grievous loss."
