Experts Criticize the Decision of the FDA to Shorten Vaccine Funding

  • The shortening of funding for MRN vaccines has sparked criticism from experts.
  • Experts assert that the MRN vaccines are ineffective, but scientists refute this.
  • There are plans to invest in traditional vaccines, which require more time for development.

Experts in the field of health security, including former officials from the Trump administration, express concern regarding the FDA's decision to shorten funding for vaccine projects based on MRN by nearly $500 million. This funding was designated for 22 projects, which were carried out through the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).

Jeremiah Adams, a former U.S. Surgeon General, emphasized that this decision could lead to loss of lives. He noted that the MRN technology has potential not only for combating COVID-19 but also for other pathogens, such as flu and cancer.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Secretary of Health, announced the suspension of funding, stating that the vaccines based on MRN are not effective against viruses that affect the respiratory pathways. However, some experts challenged his statement, indicating that MRN vaccines have saved millions of lives during the pandemic.

Kennedy also pointed out that instead of MRN vaccines, the administration plans to invest in other approaches, such as vaccines based on whole inactivated viruses, which, according to experts, require more time for development.

Critics emphasize that reverting from new technologies to outdated methods carries risks and may lead to increased variability in pandemic conditions.
