In Phoenix, Arizona, 18-year-old Kaden Lopez was arrested after he threw a sex toy onto the court during the game between the Phoenix Mercury and the Connecticut Sun. The incident occurred on August 7, 2025. Lopez was arrested for disturbing the peace, assault, and public demonstration of obscene materials.
It begins to appear that this is already the fourth similar "incident" at WNBA games over the last two weeks. Lopez noted that his actions were inspired by a trending topic on social media. He emphasized that he did not intend to cause harm, but simply wanted to participate in a trend that had become popular.
After the toy hit a man and his 9-year-old daughter, Lopez was detained until police arrived. The affected man and the game organizers expressed a desire to file a complaint against him in court.
In a statement, the WNBA indicated that there is zero tolerance for all attendees at games. They stressed that any inappropriate behavior during the game can create a safety concern for players and spectators. Lopez received a conditional release that prohibits him from returning to the arena until the case is resolved on August 25.
Similar incidents occurred at games on July 29 and September 1, when other fans threw sex toys onto the field during games in various locations, including Chicago and Atlanta. The league has already announced a zero-tolerance policy for similar behavior.
