Court Halts Construction of Immigration Detention Center in Florida
- The court has halted the construction of the "Alligator Alcatraz" detention center in Florida.
- Environmental groups assert that the project threatens the fragile ecosystem.
- Former employees report horrific conditions for detained immigrants.
On May 7, 2025, Federal Judge Ketlin Williams upheld a decision to temporarily halt the construction of the immigration detention center known as "Alligator Alcatraz" in Florida. This decision was made following lawsuits filed by environmental groups claiming that the construction violates laws protecting fragile ecosystems.
The center, located in sensitive wetlands, will continue to detain immigrants, but for the next 14 days, it is prohibited from adding new elements to its infrastructure. Advocates assert that the project threatens the habitat of protected species of plants and animals.
During the two-day hearing, witnesses described the deplorable conditions at the center, depicting it as a "nightmarish hell" for immigrants. A former employee of the center reported on the lack of access to basic necessities and horrible conditions of detention. Some immigrants suffered from inadequate food and water supplies.
In turn, a representative from the Department of Homeland Security denounced all allegations, calling them unfounded. The construction of the center began under the harsh immigration policies of the Trump administration.
