The Boston Red Sox signed a contract with rookie Roman Anthony, who is expected to earn 130 million dollars over the next eight years. This move became possible due to the fact that the team decided to trade Rafael Devers, which allowed them to allocate funds for signing the young talent.
Anthony, a 21-year-old outfielder, signed a contract that runs through 2033, with the possibility of extension until 2034. At the moment of signing the deal, the team was in a series with seven wins, which underscores the positive impact of the player on the collective.
In his debut at the press conference, Anthony stated that he was pleased with the decision to stay with the team, noting that he feels like part of a special group. According to him, he wants to continue showing his best game.
Initially, it was noted that Anthony's contract elicited mixed reactions in the baseball community, as the deal for a player with limited experience in the major leagues is risky. Many experts believe that such a deal could influence the salary dynamics within the team and raise expectations.
Anthony was selected in the second round of the MLB draft in 2022 and quickly rose through the ranks of the Red Sox. In 2024, he had a batting average of .298, 27 home runs, and 89 RBIs in the minor leagues.
This deal is part of the Red Sox strategy aimed at building a young core of the team. The team has already signed long-term contracts with several promising players, such as Bryan Bello and Keddane Rafael.
The decision to sign Anthony may become a new trend in MLB, as some teams have already begun to sign early contracts with young players to avoid rising salaries in the future.
