In White-Sulfur Springs, West Virginia, during practice, an incident occurred that drew attention. Defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson sustained a serious leg injury while attempting to make a tackle on receiver John Mechie III.

After the contact with Mechie, Gardner-Johnson fell to the ground and began to writhe in pain. Medical personnel quickly came onto the field to provide assistance, while the training staff took him off the field. As a result, he was taken to the medical facility, unable to place weight on the injured leg.

The head coach of the team, Demeco Ryans, informed reporters that he did not have any new information regarding the player's condition, but acknowledged that it was serious.

Gardner-Johnson joined the Texans this offseason, having transitioned from Philadelphia in a trade for linebacker Kenyon Green. He was expected to be a starting safety for the team after Texas lost Eric Murray through free agency.

In the previous season, Gardner-Johnson reached a career maximum with six interceptions while playing for Philadelphia. Earlier, he appeared for New Orleans, as well as for the Lions in 2023 before returning to Philadelphia.
