Texas Democrats announced their exit from the session to prevent redistricting that could lead to an increase in the number of seats for the Republican Party. They find themselves in states where they can receive support, but this decision is not without consequences.
For each day of absence without a security permit, lawmakers may face a fine of $500. These fines have already exceeded their previous secret salaries, which amount to $600 per month. Additionally, since legislative sessions last only six months every two years, most representatives have to maintain their primary jobs, which they left in Texas.
These financial factors, along with the necessity to be far from their families, complicate the situation for Democrats. They are trying to raise funds to support their causes, which has provoked negative reactions from Republicans, who are also trying to limit their funding.
Democrats noted that on the first day they raised nearly $20,000 in small donations. Additionally, former Congressman Beto O'Rourke organized a fundraising event for covering expenses related to survival and legal defense, which became a source for investigation from the Texas Attorney General's office, who accused O'Rourke of "illegal activities."
At the same time, Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Republicans threaten arrests of Democrats who remain in the state to prevent a return to the Capitol.
Funding and Political Consequences
Democrats who remain in Texas are trying to secure support from other states, including from governors willing to provide assistance. Notably, lawmakers recognize that their action cannot continue indefinitely due to financial limitations and obligations before families.
Overall, the situation is becoming increasingly complicated, as Republicans are trying to capitalize on this moment to solidify their position in the upcoming elections.
