Criticism of Kris Wright's Plans Regarding Climate Change Assessments
- Kris Wright announced a review of national climate assessments
- Scientists criticize the administration's attempts to downplay the seriousness of climate change
- Recent reports raise doubts about the reliability of scientific data
The Secretary of Energy of the United States, Kris Wright, was subjected to criticism from scientists following the announcement of the Trump administration's intention to "update" national assessments of climate change impacts. Wright, a former leader of an oil and gas company, stated that the administration is reviewing reports, publicly available from previous administrations.
Since 2000, five national assessments of climate change have been published, which are considered the standard in this field. According to Wright, these reports "were not accurate" in their overall assessments of climate change impacts. He noted that some "inaccurate" data should be corrected.
Critics, including scientists, consider this effort to downplay the seriousness of climate issues problematic. They refer to a recently published report by the Department of Energy, which claims that the observed changes in climate are exaggerated. Scientists like Michael Mann have compared the administration's actions to methods used during the Stalin era.
In April, the American Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Union announced a collaboration to create new research on the impacts of climate change. The latest report on climate, published by the Trump administration, has sparked concerns about the potential rollback of nearly all ecological norms, which could lead to legal battles in the coming years.
