Venus Williams, who returned to tennis last month after a long absence, played in the first round of the tournament in Cincinnati. The American lost to Spanish Jessica Bouzas Maneiro with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in a match that lasted 1 hour 28 minutes.
Williams, who ranks 643rd in the world ranking, tried to fight back, but was unable to maintain her serve. She double-faulted on the first point of each of the two sets, but managed to level the score to 4-4, only to lose her serve again.
This was her second tournament since returning, after reaching the second round in Washington in early July. Previously, Williams participated in the US Open, where she received a wild card to compete in mixed doubles competitions starting September 19.
Williams became the oldest woman to win a match on the WTA tour in the last 20 years, when she defeated Peyton Sterns at the DC Open last month. She also has significant experience, having participated 11 times in the tournament in Cincinnati, where she reached the semifinals in 2012 and the quarterfinals in 2019.
