The feature automatically displays information about local activities shared by those who have posted recently, based on their last activity when they opened Instagram or published stories. However, this does not guarantee constant real-time updates. Meta emphasizes that location sharing can be turned off, and users have full control over access.
After the launch of the feature, many users expressed concerns about privacy risks associated with location sharing. Some influential individuals have advised their followers to disable public access to their location, highlighting the risks to privacy. Lia Haberman, an author of a social media information bulletin, noted that Meta has a poor reputation regarding privacy issues.
Users can adjust their location sharing settings so that only selected individuals or their "close friends" list can see their location. Instagram also provides parents with the ability to receive notifications when their children are sharing their locations.
