HAMILTON, Ontario — NBA MVP Shai Gildius-Alexander received the keys from the city of Hamilton from Mayor Andrea Horvat at a public ceremony on Thursday at Hamilton's stadium.
Horvat also announced that the street in Oklahoma City will be named in his honor after he completed an epic season, helping the Thunder win the NBA title.
"I remember when I was traveling the world, to various states, cities, and countries, people always asked where I was from. I was proud when I said I was from Hamilton," Gildius-Alexander said at an emotional gathering in the southern sector of the stadium, holding the NBA championship trophy over his head. "Hamilton stands out from other cities in Ontario; Hamiltonians have a unique spirit, resilience, pride, and energy. I always carry this with me, you can just imagine how happy I was when I found out I was receiving the keys from the city I love, and the street named after my name."
Gildius-Alexander returned to the stadium on Thursday evening. He was honored at the beginning of the second timeout during the CFL game between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and B.C. Lions.
