On Friday, August 8, 2025, the Israeli cabinet approved a plan by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the expansion of military operations in Gaza. This decision marks a stage in the escalation of the conflict, which has been ongoing for 22 months following the Hamas attack on July 7, 2023.
Before the meeting, which lasted into the early hours, Netanyahu stated that Israel intends to take control of the entire territory of Gaza.
Seven guarantors, who are currently in Gaza, are protesting, expressing discontent with Netanyahu's plans. They argue that military actions could endanger the lives of their loved ones.
International health organizations reported that Gaza has recorded the highest rate of acute malnutrition among children under 5 years old.
Israeli officials plan a dual operation that includes the capture of Gaza and the evacuation of nearly a million residents. This will require the urgent creation of civilian infrastructure.
The proposal discusses a limited operation that may aim to secure military positions, which are fortified by risks of prolonged occupation. The army commander warned that the occupation of Gaza could lead to prolonged insurgency and humanitarian problems.
According to local doctors, 42 Palestinians died as a result of Israeli airstrikes and shooting in southern Gaza, including 13 people who were seeking help in the area controlled by the Israeli army.
