Ben Shelton claimed the title at the National Bank Open in Toronto, winning his third title of his career. In the final, he defeated the 11th-seeded Karen Khachanov from Russia with a score of 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (3).
The 22-year-old Shelton, who was seeded fourth in this tournament, made 16 aces during the final. This victory allows him to rise to sixth place in the world ranking.
Shelton became the first American to win a Masters 1000 title in Canada since 2003, when it was achieved by Andy Roddick. He also won on hard courts in Tokyo in 2023 and on clay in Houston earlier this year.
Khachanov, a 29-year-old tennis player, has seven titles in his career, all on hard courts. In the semifinal, he overcame his own challenge, surviving a match point in the third set against Aleksandr Zverev.
In the tournament, the best players in the world did not participate - Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who are preparing for the upcoming US Open.
In the doubles final, Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool defeated Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski in a tense battle, securing four match points.
