Increase in the population of black rhinos does not save other species

  • The population of black rhinos has increased to 6,788 individuals.
  • The situation with Javan and Sumatran rhinos remains critical.
  • Southern Africa is facing an increased level of poaching.

The latest global report on rhinos shows mixed results for five species of rhinos in Africa and Asia. The population of black rhinos, which are found only in the wild in eastern and southern Africa, increased from 6,195 to 6,788. This indicates a positive trend for this critically endangered species.

The population of greater one-horned rhinos, which inhabit northern India and southern Nepal, also increased from 4,014 to 4,075. It is noted that this species is a successful example of wildlife conservation, although at the beginning of the 20th century in India there were only about 200 individuals left.

However, the situation with other species of rhinos is troubling. Sumatran rhinos, which are only found in Indonesia, remain at the brink of extinction with a population of just 34-47 individuals. Their survival is threatened by poaching and habitat loss due to palm oil plantations. The population of Javan rhinos has significantly decreased from 76 to 50 individuals, also due to poaching. Only one location is known where they still exist — a national park on the island of Java.

In Africa, the population of white rhinos decreased from 15,942 to 15,752, which is attributed to increased poaching pressure from poachers. Despite the decline in illegal trade in rhinos worldwide, the situation in Southern Africa remains concerning. In the first quarter of 2025, at least 91 rhinos were killed. Southern Africa accounts for two-thirds of the illegal rhino populations in the world.

Efforts are being made to find new ways to combat poaching. One of the projects involves the injection of radioactive material into rhinos, so they can be detected on borders during contraband checks. According to scientists, this does not harm the animals.
