Cambodia and Thailand agree on support for fragile ceasefire

  • Hundreds of monks honored the memory of fallen soldiers of Cambodia.
  • Cambodia and Thailand agreed to monitor the ceasefire.
  • Prime Minister of Cambodia thanked Trump for his assistance in the peace process.

On Friday in Cambodia, hundreds of Buddhist monks held a ceremony in honor of the soldiers who died during the recent border clashes with Thailand. They prayed for peace and honored the memory of the fallen, marching from the main religious school to the temple in the city of Phnom Penh.

The ceremony took place in the wake of a recent agreement between Cambodia and Thailand on support for a fragile ceasefire, achieved on July 28. This agreement stipulates that both sides are obliged to maintain a fire cessation regime, including a ban on attacks on civilians.

Negotiations, which took place in Kuala-Lumpur, concluded with the signing of a joint statement requiring the creation of monitoring teams to ensure compliance with the ceasefire. This became a necessary step after five days of intense fighting, which resulted in numerous casualties and displacement of over 260,000 people.

During the negotiations, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to the agreement, despite the unresolved issue regarding 18 Cambodian soldiers who were captured at the start of the ceasefire. The agreement stipulates their immediate release after the cessation of active hostilities.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for his role in the cessation of the conflict, calling him "an extraordinary statesman."
