Western United Loses License Due to Financial Issues

  • Western United has lost its license due to non-compliance with financial requirements
  • The club plans to appeal the decision of Football Australia
  • Financial losses of the club exceed 11 million dollars

The club Western United, based in Melbourne, has lost its license due to non-compliance with financial requirements, which threatens its existence altogether three years after winning the A-League Men championship title.

According to a statement from Football Australia, the independent board that reviews clubs for compliance with licensing criteria, upheld the decision to revoke the club's license. This means that Western United cannot participate in competitions sanctioned by FA, including A-Leagues.

Football Australia confirmed that the club may appeal this decision. The club stated that it plans to file an appeal and provide a response to the board.

Stephen Conroy, the head of the Australian Professional Leagues, noted that their organization is awaiting the results of the appeal process. He emphasized that this matter is part of the regular process.

Licensing requirements are aimed at ensuring the integrity of Australian football competitions and include financial standards. Previously, clubs had to meet these requirements by July 31, but Western United regularly delayed payments to players and fell under a transfer ban.

The club, which joined the A-League only in 2019, is going through tough times. Currently, the liquidation process is ongoing, initiated by the club’s creditors, including tax authorities. A hearing is scheduled in the federal court.

Western United also reported financial losses, which totaled 11 million dollars for the previous financial year, while the total liabilities exceeded 55 million dollars. The upcoming A-League Men season is set to start in early July.
