Trump Initiated a New Census of the U.S. Population to Strengthen Republican Control

  • Trump plans a new census, including illegal immigrants.
  • Changes could affect the political balance in Congress.
  • A Congressional agreement is necessary to change the census procedure.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to conduct a new population census that would exclude illegal immigrants. He directed the Department of Commerce to begin preparations for this census.

Trump emphasized that the census will be based on current data and information obtained during the 2024 presidential elections. According to him, individuals who are residing in the country illegally will not be counted.

This initiative has sparked controversy and could lead to legal challenges, particularly since changing the census procedure may significantly alter the balance of power in Congress, especially ahead of the critical 2026 midterm elections.

According to the U.S. Constitution, the population census is conducted every ten years to determine the number of seats each state receives in Congress. The 14th Amendment also requires that the total population of individuals in each state be taken into account.

This is not Trump’s first attempt to change the census. Previously, he sought to add a question about citizenship to the census, but the Supreme Court blocked that idea. Legal experts point out that Trump does not have the authority to unilaterally change the census procedure, as Congressional approval is needed for this.

Trump also stressed that changes in the census could lead to a re-evaluation of district maps in states controlled by Republicans, such as Texas, where Republicans are seeking to gain additional seats in Congress.
