The U.S. government has raised the reward to $50 million for information leading to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. General Prosecutor Pam Bondi announced this in a video shared on social media platform X, accusing Maduro of collaborating with criminal organizations, such as the Venezuelan "Trem de Aragua" and the Mexican Sinaloa cartel, in the trafficking of narcotics to the U.S.
In the announcement, Bondi notes that Maduro is one of the largest drug traffickers in the world and poses a threat to U.S. national security. According to the Ministry's data, since 2020 Maduro has been indicted for drug trafficking and conspiracy with the intent to import cocaine. The reward for his arrest initially started at $15 million, then was raised to $25 million by the Biden administration.
During his term, Maduro has spoken about the upcoming 2024 elections, which were recognized as fraudulent by several countries, including the U.S. Washington supports the opposition leader Edmundo González, who provided documents confirming his fraud.
Bondi also mentioned that the U.S. Department of Justice has confiscated assets linked to Maduro, totaling over $700 million, including two private jets. Maduro continues to remain in his position, disregarding international pressure.
In response to the increased reward, the Venezuelan Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivan Gil called this move "patriotic" and "the biggest smear campaign." He accused Bondi of political manipulation and stated that "the dignity of our homeland cannot be bought."
