The Liverpool football club has announced the appointment of Gareth Taylor as the new head coach of the team.
Taylor, who previously worked at Manchester City, replaces Amber Whiteley, who had been in charge during the latter part of the 2024-25 season. Liverpool had been without a permanent manager since the summer, when Matt Beard was dismissed.
Gareth Taylor was dismissed from Manchester City in February, just five days before the Women's League Cup final. Under his management, the team won the FA Cup in 2020 and the league cup in 2022. However, in the 2023-24 season, the team failed to secure the WSL title, finishing behind Chelsea by a difference of goals.
Liverpool finished last season in seventh place, ending up with 35 points behind champions Chelsea. In his new role, Taylor aims to return the team to the upper echelons of the table.
The director of women's football at Liverpool, Andy O'Boyle, noted that Taylor has extensive experience in developing young players, which was a key factor in his appointment. The team hopes that the new coach will help them find their identity and return to success.
The new WSL season kicks off for Liverpool with a match against Everton on September 7.
