Ben Shelton Wins the National Bank Open

Ben Shelton won the National Bank Open, securing his third title in his career, defeating 11th-seeded Karen Khachanov from Russia with a score of 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (3).
The 22-year-old tennis player, currently ranked fourth, is the first American to win a Masters 1000 tournament on hard courts since 2003. Previously, he won on hard courts in Tokyo in 2023 and on grass in Houston last year.
"This is an incredible feeling," Shelton said. "This week has been tough, and I showed my best tennis in the most important moments."
Shelton rises to one position in the world rankings to sixth place. He defeated Khachanov after previously defeating fellow seed Taylor Fritz with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
"This week has been an ideal storm for me," he added. "I played some of the best matches of this year."
The winner made seven of 16 aces in the third set and finished the match, winning 14 points on his serve.
Ben's father and coach, Bryan Shelton, noted: "He believed in his shots and executed everything he trained. It's always special when you leave a tournament with a trophy."
29-year-old Khachanov has six titles in his career, all on hard courts. In the semifinals, he defeated match-point opponent in another third set.
"This is a positive result, a wonderful tournament," Khachanov said.
Top players Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz missed this tournament, preparing for the upcoming US Open.
In the final, Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool won with a score of 6-3, 6-7 (5), 13-11.
