The Philippines Confirmed Its Position on the Conflict with Taiwan

  • The Philippines is ready to engage in the conflict between China and Taiwan.
  • China accused the Philippines of being involved in its internal affairs.
  • Tensions are rising in the South China Sea due to territorial disputes.

The Philippines confirmed its position regarding possible involvement in the conflict between China and Taiwan. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. stated that in the event of a large-scale war in his country, he would be compelled to intervene.

During a state visit to India on August 4, 2025, he noted that a large number of Filipinos in Taiwan create a humanitarian problem that requires action from Manila. According to the economic and cultural office of the Philippines in Taipei, nearly 200 thousand Filipinos live in Taiwan.

In response to these comments, China accused the Philippines of being "in the group of fire." The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China stated that the geographical proximity and large number of foreign nationals cannot be an excuse for intervening in the internal affairs of other countries. Beijing insisted that Manila adhere to the "One China" principle and refrain from actions that threaten Chinese interests.

These statements come amid increasing tensions between China and the Philippines over territorial disputes in the South China Sea. Both countries accuse each other of aggressive maneuvers, which prompted the U.S. to reaffirm its readiness to defend the Philippines.

Marcos emphasized that the Philippines adheres to the "One China" principle but called for dialogue and peaceful resolution of the differences between Taiwan and China.
